Man jailed six months, fined RM12,000 over insulting post on socks issue

PETALING JAYA: A 34-year-old man was fined RM12,000 and sentenced to six months in jail over an insulting Facebook post on the controversial socks issue.

Chiok Wai Loong pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 after it was read out to him before Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court judge Suzana Hussin, Sinar Harian reported on Friday (March 22).

The charge is punishable under Section 233(3) of the Act, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a jail term of not more than one year, or both, upon conviction.

Pleading for a lighter sentence, Chiok said he was just a “keyboard warrior”.

“It did not occur to me that the comments would hurt the feelings of others,” Sinar Harian quoted him as saying in mitigation.
