This Corgi Is Now China’s Most Popular Police Officer

Meet six-month-old Fuzai, whose short legs are not a weakness but an advantage, at least according to his trainer.

When one thinks of service dogs in the armed forces, a cute-looking corgi is not the first breed that comes to mind.

C’mon, those stumpy limbs and bright smiles may be adorable, but who is a corgi going to save?

Introducing Fuzai (or “Lucky Boy” in Mandarin), a six-month-old corgi who recently made his debut at a police open camp in Weifang, Shandong.

Naturally, onlookers couldn’t help but whip out their phones to take videos and pictures of Fuzai, quickly making him the talk of the event.

Videos of the cute-looking pooch swiftly went viral online, with one video hitting more than 1.5 million views on Weibo.

One vid also showed a line of muzzled German Shepherds — a breed commonly used by police forces — walking by, with Fuzai at the end of the line strapped to the back of an officer and his fuzzy paws dangling out.

Aww… did those corgi limbs tire out?

Before you poo-poo the idea of the short-legged cutie being any good in dire situations, think again.

According to his handlers, Fuzai’s short legs are an advantage when investigating the bottom of cars, and especially between tight and narrow spaces.

Fuzai’s trainer Zhao Qingshuai even defensively said: “Short legs are not his weakness but his advantage.”

Wang Yanan who heads the police dog base at Weifang’s public security bureau also said Fuzai’s adorable look can improve interactions between police dogs and the public.

“Police dogs are not only cute, but trainers have done a lot of work and gone to a lot of effort to train them to be professional,” he said.

According to Chinese media, Fuzai started his training when he was only two months old and has since outperformed his peers.

But it seems netizens couldn’t wait to poke fun at Fuzai and flooded the Internet with comical comments.

“The corgi is watching everyone’s back for danger!” wrote a netizen in response to Fuzai being strapped to the back of a police officer.

One even hilariously wrote, “Even gangs have one person who entertains the team.”

Some took shots at how Fuzai managed to score a job in the government sector.

“Look at Shandong! Even a corgi puppy has passed the civil servant exam!” read one comment.

For now, Fuzai is still a reserve police dog and is finishing up his foundational training stage.

The pooch is expected to become a fully-fledged member by the time he turns one.

Is Fuzai making sure no danger comes from behind?
