Woman dies in hospital after SUV crashes into Sitiawan fast-food restaurant
IPOH: The 73-year-old woman who was hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) that crashed into a fast-food restaurant in Sitiawan on Thursday (May 8) night has died.
Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the victim was pronounced dead at 10.56pm on Thursday after receiving treatment at the emergency ward of the Seri Manjung Hospital.
He said that seven other victims (in the incident), consisting of four men, two women, and a girl aged between five and 38 years, sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the same hospital.
“Initial police investigations at the scene found that the SUV, driven by a 29-year-old man, was coming from the direction of Kampung Koh and heading towards Sungai Wangi.
“When it reached the traffic lights intersection in front of the fast-food restaurant in Sitiawan, the driver is believed to have lost control, veering to the right before crashing into the restaurant and hitting eight customers, comprising seven adults and one child,” he said in a statement on Friday (May 9).
Hasbullah said that following this, his team detained the vehicle driver who sustained injuries in the accident.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
On Thursday, a video of the incident went viral on social media, showing a white SUV losing control and crashing into the restaurant in question.
In the incident at 9.10pm, the victim was reported to have been trapped under the vehicle before being rescued by bystanders at the scene. – Bernama
